Peer Baba Dargah in Jammu and Kashmir

Peer Baba is the famous Dargah (tomb) of the Muslim saint, Peer Budhan Ali Shah. On Thursdays apart from Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs also come in large numbers to pay respect to the Saint.

The Dargah (shrine) of Peer Budhan Ali Shah or Peer Baba is said to protect the people of this city from mishaps and evil spirits. A friend of Guru Gobind Singh, it is said that Peer Baba lived his entire life on milk alone and lived to the age of five hundred and still people from all faiths and religions verate him in equal respect. Peer Mitha was a saint who has a shrine of his own and was a contemporary of Ajaib Dev and Ghareeb Nath, who were famous for their prophecies and miracles. ‘Mitha’ means ‘the sweet one’ and the saint was so-called, as the Peer would accept nothing more than a pinch of sugar in offering from his devotees.

 

About Peer Baba Dargah :

The Dargah of Peer Budhan Ali Shah is located in the outskirts of Jammu City at a distance of about 8 Km from aerodrome at Satwari. Peer Budhan was born at Talwandi in Punjab and has a shrine located in Anandpur Sahib in Punjab. This shrine is very popular among all the sections of society. According to the popular faith The Dargah of Peer Baba protect the people of the city from any kind of mishap and evil spirits. A friend of tenth guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh, he had lived his entire life on milk alone. He was survived to the age of about 500 years old and even after his death the reverence and the admiration has remained all the same. An annual Urs takes place on first Thursday of Ashad and another Urs is held in the middle of Pousha. Both these events attract large number of devotees from far off places. Most of the visitors make it a point to visit the Shrine on a trip to Jammu and feel blessed. The power of faith and belief can be gauged only after a visit to this divine shrine of Peer Baba.
