Guruvayurappan temple is in Nanganallur, southern suburbs of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu. Nanganallur, which is the abode of many Gods and Goddesses, was some aeons ago a thick forest populated by many ‘tapasvis’. One of them was the disabled Bilwamangal of Kerala who did penance at the place where the Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple now stands. An ardent devotee of Lord Guruvayurappan (Lord Krishna), he had a ‘divine vision’ of the Lord who assured him that a temple would be built there.

Uttara Guruvayurappan temple is located in Nanganallur, once a thick forest populated by many ‘tapasvis’ and now a temple town, the abode of many Gods and Goddesses. An ardent devotee of Lord uruvayoorappan Tapsvi Bilwamangal had a ‘divine vision’ of the Lord who assured him that a temple would be built in Nanganallur. This temple came to be called ‘Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple’ since it is north of the original temple in Kerala and have the main deity Sri Guruvayurappan. Pal payasam’ is a special offering to the Lord. The temple is based on Kerala architecture and the kumbabishekam was conducted on April 17, 1975. The namaskara mandapam have the idol of saint ‘Bilwamangal’ in the front. This is a pious place to visit and offer the prayers to Lord Guruvayurappan.
Features Of Sri Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple In Chennai :
The ‘Prasnam’ revealed that this was the place where the Lord Guruvayurappan gave darshan to his devotee, Bilwamangalam. Thus, there is an idol of Bilwamangalam Swamy in front of the main Sanctum Santorium. Other Idols in the temple include Lord Ganesha, Bhagawathy, Dharmasasta, Lord Venkateswara, Lord Sankarshana and the Navagrahas.
The poojas are performed in line with the routine followed at Guruvayur, Kerala, including Sriveli of the Lord and Chutru Vilakku. Special festivals include Kaisika Ekadasi, Chittirai thiruvizha (April-May), Narayaneeyam day, Krishnashtami, Dhanvantri homam and many more.
Sampoorna Parayanam of the “Narayaneeyam” is done on the third thursday of every tamil month, by a group of ladies.
Among the offerings are the Palpayasam, curdrice and Pongal (during the month of Margazhi). One can also offer tulabharam like at Guruvayur.
