About Tsomgo Lake
Tsomgo Lake Located at a height of 12400 ft, at a distance of 38 Km from Gangtok Tsongmo lake is 1 Km long. It takes 2 to 3 hours by road to reach this oval shape lake. Depth of Tsomgo lake is 15 meters. During winter seasons this Tsomgo lake remains frozen providing tourists lot of fun.
Changu Lake is open for both Indian and foreign tourist but permission is to be taken from local officials. Travel agents usually arrange the permit and are issued on the same day of the journey. Please keep two passpoert size photos of each adult member of the family and identity proof of the members. The road to this lake is maintained by a unit of Indian army. Total road passes through hills with sharp bends and bridges. This area is an ideal habitat of red panda and Yaks. Near the lake tourist can go for a Yak rid around the lake. In the peak summer seasons one can find snow in the hill surrounding the lake.
There are many shops by the side of the lake selling noodles and other food items. Woolen dress and local handicrafts are also available. Tsomgo lake is only 40 kms. from Gangtok town and is situated at an altitude of 12,210 ft. The drive from Gangtok takes about 2½ hours by bus. The lake is bout 1 km. long and oval in shape, 50ft. deep and is regarded extremely Holy. It is also a home of Brahmini ducks besides stopover for various migratory ducks.
Journey to Tsomgo lake in Sikkim
Tsomgo lake in Sikkim is easily approachable from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, India. Gantok is well connected to rest of India via air, road.
Airport : Nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal( 124 kms.), from where scheduled flights operates to and fro from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati. The Bagdogra airport is connected to Gangtok by a helicopter service operating between Gangtok – Bagdogra – Gangtok.
Railhead : Two nearest railway station are at Siliguri (114 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) stabilizing link to Calcutta, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and other important cities in India.
Road Transport : Gangtok is connected with all weather mettaled road with Siliguri, Kalimpong, Gangtok etc. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is connected by all weather road to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and also to all the District headquarters within Sikkim.
Private Taxis, Jeeps and Landrovers ply regularly on the Gangtok Siliguri Highway and are available for transfer of passengers between Gangtok and Siliguri/ New Jalpaiguri Junction/ Bagdogra, and also for local sightseeing at fixed rates and may be reserved through Tourist Bureau, Govt. of West Bengal, Gangtok.
