Nainital is a glorious hill station for tourism in Uttaranchal. It is 336 kms from Delhi. Which was discovered by Lord Barron, a Britisher in 1841. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides.The first one is Naina (2615 meters) the second is Deopatha (2438 meters) and the third is Ayarpatha (2278 meters). Naina is the highest mountain among the three. From the sea-level Nainital hill station is located at a height of 6,350 feet. In winter Nainital has freezing cold temperature falling below zero degrees centigrade. Every year during December to February Nainital hill station gets its annual snowfall. - Naini Lake : Nainital is the city of lakes, of which probably the most famous is the shimmering Naini Lake or Naini Taal, which is also the centre point of the city. Hindu mythology states the lake as the very place where the eye of Goddess Parvati (Lord Siva’s wife) fell, thus turning the place into a lake, as pretty as the Goddess herself. The Naina devi temple near the lake side is a popular Hindu pilgrimage.
- Snow View : Situated at an altitude of 2270 mts above the sea level, this peak affords majestic views of the snow covered Himalayan peaks. The place can be accessed via the ropeway or ponies available at the mall. The place is also a good picnic spot with a few restaurants and refreshment shops situated nearby.
- St. John Church : Nainital was developed as a summer resort by the British. The ‘raj’ may have ended long ago but the legacy still lives on in the form of colonial structures that have beautifully encountered the harshness of time. St. John church is one such structure which reminds of the glorious erstwhile days. A graveyard situated nearby houses the years old graves of people who once called the place home.
- Naina Devi Temple : Located on the northern side of the lake, the temple is dedicated to goddess Sati and is known as Naina Devi Temple.
- Hanuman Garhi : The place is popular for its temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and also offers a spectacular sunset view.
- Nandadevi Fair : Held in the month of September every year, this fair attracts tourist and local people on a large scale. Various events reflect the tradition and culture of both Garhwal and Kumaon region.
- Dorothy’s Seat: at a height of 2, 292 m is a memorial to an English lady believed to have been killed in an air crash. The spot commands a sectional view of the town and the nearby region. The peak was known as Ayarpatta Hill. Dorothy’s seat is also known as Tiffin Top.
- Kilburi Hill ( Nainital ) : Kilburi is 13kms far from the main town Nainital. It is the only place from where you can find the bird’s eye looking view of the Naine Lake. It is very cold and peaceful area. One can find the close Himalayan view from there.
- Cave Garden : There are many attractions in Nainital one of them is “Cave Garden”. It is situated at Malli Tal. The garden has six small caves with the forms of tiger, panther, porcupine etc, and a musical fountain operating during the best season. This garden is the best option for getting kids interested in nature and takes a liking to exploring things.
- Bhimtal Lake : Bhimtal is 25 kms far from Nainital. The famous five Pandavas of ‘Mahabharata’ came there and one of them named “Bhim” killed a devil on this pleace. So it is called Bhimtal.

- Naina Peak : Naina peak, which is also known as Cheena Peak is the most favorite picnic spot of Nainital. It’s height is 2612meaters. It is 6 km far from Nainital. We can easily view the snow garbing Himalayas, plane areas, Nainital city and its locality.

- China Peak : (2611 MT) The highest peak of Nainital provides a challenge to the most avid trekkers. Situated about 6 kms from the town China Peak is known for its splendid Bird’s eye view of the town, the Himalayas and also the vast expanses of the Terai regions of Kumaon.
- Tiffin Top : (2290 mt) also known as Dorothy’s seat -in memory of an English lady Mrs. Kellet Dorothy, who was killed in an air crash Tiffin top is a short trek of about 3 kms from Nainital and provides excellent view of the Himalayas and the town.
- Observatory : It is about 4.5 km from Nainital. Situated at an altitude of (1951 MT).Observatory is basically a place of astronomical studies.Public is shown round some of the instruments during working days at afternoons.For niht viewing three four days on moonlit nights are fixed and permission is needed.
- Land’s end : (2118 MT) About 4 kms from town provides a magnificent view of the plains and the beautiful Khurpa Tal surrounded by beautiful village and pine forests.
- Hanuman Garhi : (1950 MT) About 3 kms from Nainital is the famous temple of Lord Hanumanji. One can view the magnificent sun set from here.
- View Point : About 5 kms away from Nainital on the way to Kilbury, nestled at a height of about (2300 MT)is the beautiful tourist spot, from here one can have a glimpse of mighty Himalayan ranges and lower forested ridges. It is a very good place to pass some time in solitude enjoying the beauty of nature.
Nainital Shopping :
Mallital, Tallital and the Tibetan market are the places to shop. If you want to shop for some handicraft items, Hill Top Tourist Point on the Mall and the Kasta Kala Kendra Collection are the places to check out. Fabrics and Woolen garments are the most famous items for shopping. It is simply impractical to return from Nainital Hill Station, India without shopping. A gamut of sweaters, cardigans, caps and shawls in beautiful designs and striking colors impress the minds of tourists. Excellently carved cane sticks and variously colored candles are also available. Imposing wood carved utilities can also be bought. The fruit market abounds in orchard apples, peaches and cherries.
Climate of Nainital :
Nainital is located in the Kumaon hills and the weather is very pleasant throughout the year except during winter months. The temperature is not very high at any time but in winters it becomes very cold. The climate of Nainital is regulated by the lake here which showers rain almost every afternoon. The best time visit the place is between April to June and then again in September October. The months of January to March are marked by the snowfall which is for a very short time. It is advisable that contact any local person before going to Nainital to watch snowfall.

By Air : Pantnagar airport, situated around 70 km from Nainital is the nearest airport, though not very well connected to other major Indian cities. Buses and private taxis are easily available from Pantnagar to reach Nainital. It is advisable, however, to travel to Delhi (nearest international airport) by air and take a train or better still, travel by a taxi to Nainital from there.
By Rail : Kathgodam is the nearest and most convenient railhead to access Nainital. Situated just 34 km away, the place is connected by direct trains to most of the major Indian cities including Delhi, Calcutta and Lucknow. From Kathgodam, you can hire a taxi or board a local bus to reach Nainital. A daily train between Delhi and Kathgodam is the Ranikhet Exp which leaves Delhi station at 22:40 and arrives Kathgodam at 5:45.
By Road : Travelling by road is the most interesting option as the enchanting views on offer can best be observed and admired this way. State transport corporation operates regular buses between Nainital and other major neighbouring cities. The journey from Delhi to Nainital takes around 8 hours by bus.
