About Buddhist Temple :
On the way to the Buddhist temple, I saw a woman with tattoos on her face and two black discs on her nostrils. I could not photograph her but I heard the legend behind the strange markings. Here it is:
The woman was a member of the Apatani tribe. The Apatani women were supposedly very beautiful. A nearby tribe of ferocious men used to frequently swoop down on the Apatanis to take away the women. The Apatanis, who were less belligerent people, defense was to deface their own girl child. They would poke bamboo sticks sideways through the girl’s nostrils and tattoo her face with many black streaks. I guess no amount of Fair and Lovely could fix that; so the Apatanis were left alone after that. Today the practise is banned but you could still find women of the older generation with black round nose plugs made of bamboo (known as dat) and the vertical tattoos.
