The Shatrunjaya Temple Complex was built over a long period of time. Though some of the temples have been destroyed but most of them are still standing representing the architectural pattern of that era. There are two groups of temples in the Shatrunjaya Temple Complex Palitana and all the temples come under this group.

This temple complex is dedicated to the Jains. The uniqueness in this cluster of Shatrunjaya Temple Complex Palitana is that they are mainly built in white plaster and marble. And a unique touch of architecture could be seen in the complex. Even the scenic beauty of the Shatrunjaya Temple Complex Palitana is marvelous. The sunset which could be seen from the top of the hill, behind the holy shrines is spectacular.

Among the Shatrunjaya Temple Complex Palitana the most impressive temples are Adiswara temple, Chaumukha Temple, Vimalshah, Sampriti Raja, Kumarpal, etc. All the temples are decorated with unique artworks. The pillars, curves, and the design of the roofs are very beautiful. They are decorated with intricately cut marbles and the finishings of those works are magnificent.

Once you step into the Shatrunjaya Temple Complex of Palitana you will feel a vibe created by the atmosphere. The richness of the sculptures have given this temple complex a different place. Even one can find a touch of the cultural background in this temple complex.

History:

It is believed that Rishabdeoji, the first of the Jain tirthanakras attained his nirvana on this hill. To commemorate the event, according to Jain scriptures, the first temple on the hill was built by King Bharat, son of Rishabdeo. However, most of the temples were built during the 11th and 12th centuries AD. White marble and stone were used in the construction of these temples. To an observer, these appear to be ivory miniatures when seen from a distance. Exquisite carvings of figurines, animal motifs, freizes adorn the walls of these temples.

The best time to visit Shatrunjaya Hills is November to March when the weather is pleasant in Bhavnagar.

In ancient times, Shatrunjaya Hills was known as Pundarikgiri and had 108 names given to it.

The temples at Shatrunjaya Hills are open from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm every day.

By Air:
The nearest airport is located at Bhavnagar, about 56 kms from Palitana and has daily flights with Mumbai.

By Rail:
Palitana is on the metre gauge of the Western Railway and has a connection only with Bhavnagar. The nearest railway station connected with all parts of India is Ahmedabad.

By Road:
Palitana is connected by good motorable roads with Bhavnagar, Junagadh, Ahmedabad, Porbandar, Dwaraka, Gandhidham, Mumbai and Delhi.
