The beautiful wooden garden palace stands near to the banks of the River Cauveri. Constructed in 1784 AD, mostly out of teak wood; this Indo-Islamic architecture monument – walls, pillars and the ceilings, every corner has been painted artistically telling tales of the victories, associations and events in the reign of Tipu Sultan.
After the defeat of Tipu in 1799, this palace was taken over by Colonel Arthur Wellesley and then later by the Duke of Wellington.
The palace outer walls are painted with battle scenes of second Mysore war (1780 -82) and with processions of the Nizam of Hyderabad. The inside rooms of the palace and ceilings are painted with floral pattern designs. The museum inside the palace hosts hand sketch portrayals and oil & water paintings of the royal lineage.
Different portraits of wars laid by the British at different forts of the Indian Subcontinent are on display at the Museum. Most of them are done by Captain Allen of the East India Company.
There are some good portraits of the Tipu’s confidants and his contemporary rules and associates dating back to 1801, like the Ali Razakhan, Nandi Raja, Badr-Ur-Zaman Khan and portraits of all his sons. All these painting were done by Thomas Hickey.
Tipu’s warrior portrait when he was 30 yrs old, painted by John Zaffany in 1780, stands as a special attraction because of its 3D effect.
